Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop an entity theory of schizophrenics¡¯ overcoming their problems after they tried to commit suicide. This study focused on "What is the process of schizophrenics¡¯ overcoming their problems after attempting suicide?¡¯ based on grounded theory methodology. The subjects of this study were 9 outpatients in the half-way house and mental health center. As the result of this study, a total of 158 concepts were drawn, which were classified into 44 subcategories and 15 superordinate categories. The result of analyzing the categories by paradigm showed that in the process of schizophrenics¡¯ overcoming their problems after attempting suicide, the causal condition was "no solution", "dependent on suicide", and the contextual condition corresponding to this phenomenon was ¡®being alone¡¯, ¡®being neglected¡®, and ¡®imitating suicide¡¯. The core phenomenon was ¡®coming out and breaking the illusion of suicide¡¯ The intervening condition to boost this core phenomenon was ¡®getting rid of the curiosity of suicide¡¯, ¡®having a goal¡¯, ¡®utilizing the local network¡¯, and ¡®realizing they are not alone¡¯. The action/interaction strategies were identified as ¡®ignoring the temptation of suicide¡¯, ¡®being active¡¯, ¡®finding a reason to live¡¯, ¡®thinking positively¡¯, ending up ¡®having hope¡¯, ¡®being confident¡¯, ¡®being eager to live a long life¡¯. The core concept in the process of schizophrenic people overcoming their problems after attempting suicide was revealed as ¡¯breaking the illusion of suicide and depending on life¡¯, The process of schizophrenic people overcoming their problems was ¡®the stage of depending on suicide¡¯, ¡®the stage of breaking the illusion of suicide¡¯, ¡®the stage of overcoming suicide¡¯, and ¡®the stage of having expectation for life¡¯. The study participants were classified into four types; ¡®role-finding type¡¯, ¡®future-expecting type¡¯, ¡®having-relationship type¡¯, and ¡®self-accepting type¡¯. This study is expected to have significance in establishing the first theory in Korea on schizophrenics¡¯ overcoming their problems after attempting suicide by defining the process of them overcoming their problems after attempting suicide and the types based on grounded theory.
